Doubt: the disposition of mind that arises from two contray images or representations (XVII)

I see a man in a rickety house who wants something more. He has gotten as far as the door but now doesn't know how to proceed and whether to leave. The scene beyond the door is idyllic with verdent pastures. But the man is not aware of that. In his mind are nightmare visions of hell and destruction. He cannot leave his rickety house for fear of heading somewhere even worse. And who can judge him? Maybe the safety we cling onto is more real than the promise of upping sticks. Maybe only doubt is real.

I think therfore I am.... not so sure. Is there hope, flower or is it a dark emptiness just beyond? Contemplate, calculate and then to formulate. Then to begin anew. Tantalus my king, you made me thus. I wish to be free, and then?

This pic is very emotional. I look at this and see someone deep in thought.
